Trevor Says: “Soek en Hoek” cricket is killing the “real” game
May 6th, 2008Hi Almal
So, I see the International Cricket Council (ICC) are meeting in Dubai this week and the future survival of Test cricket is very high on the agenda. The impact that the Twenty20 format (Soek en Hoek) is having on the game and how best to protect and promote Test cricket is one of the chief points on the agenda.
Even the 50 over game is in serious decline. I, for one, am a cricket purist and believe that Test cricket is the ultimate, but it seems just like fast foods, tv dinners, movies and Play Station provide instant gratification, so too is Twenty-20 cricket…In just 3 hours your cricket appetite is satisfied…
Just look at how full the terraces are in India since the inception of the money-spinning IPL…Just look at how the Standard Bank Pro-20 made the turnstiles click over, while the 50-over competition and first class cricket attracted three men and their dogs…
Even the cricket-mad Indians are shifting towards 20-20 cricket and all the glitz and glamour and fanfare associated with it. Sure, cricket is reaching an entirely new market….just look at the women and children flocking to 20-20 matches…but surely the ICC’s priority should be to “globalise” the game and not “glamourise” it.
The face of cricket has changed dramatically now in the 21st century and the process is irreversible…Not even the ICC are going to manage to come up with the answers it seems, short of limiting…or banning…20-20 cricket.
The cricket fans are, it seems, finally asking the same questions as our baseball and football-mad American friends…
So I pose the same question to you all…How can a game go on for 5 days and still produce NO result ?…Wouldn’t you rather get your 3 hours of entertainment and smash and grab excitement after a tough day at work, home or school, rather than sit and watch 5 days of “organized loafing” ?
